Operating room

Operating room of the sports orthopedics section

Dear patient,

Following its expansion in 2018, the North Surgery Center at Klinikum rechts der Isar is one of the most modern surgical centers in Europe. The Sports Orthopedics Department has access to state-of-the-art operating rooms where arthroscopic, minimally invasive, and conventional surgeries are performed.

In addition, the Sports Orthopaedics Section also performs less invasive procedures on an outpatient basis at the Center for Outpatient Surgery (ZAC) of the Klinikum rechts der Isar.

Excellent professional and human support

Our nursing team consists of registered nurses, surgical technicians, and registered nurses with advanced training as operating room nurses. Through continuous professional development and collaboration with other disciplines (e.g., anesthesiology), as well as close collaboration with sports orthopedic physicians, we are able to treat you using the latest medical and technological advancements.

We will provide you with continuous care before, during and after the operation.

How your operation will proceed

After transferring you from the ward to the operating room, the anesthesiologist will administer the anesthesia. You will then be positioned specifically for the operation to ensure optimal access to the surgical area. Following disinfection and sterile draping, the procedure will be performed as discussed with you. After the surgery and recovery from the anesthesia, you will be monitored in our recovery room. Once you have recovered from the anesthesia, you will be returned to the ward.

We will accompany you as best as possible during your stay in the operating room to alleviate any nervousness and any feelings of insecurity you may have.

Best regards
Your surgical team

Surgical preparation

Once the need for surgery has been determined during the clinical examination in the Sports Orthopaedics Department, the date of surgery is planned together with the patient.

Before any surgery, several assessments and consultations are necessary. These preliminary examinations usually take place the day before the scheduled surgical procedure (pre-surgery day).

Pre-operative day schedule

The first step on the pre-operative day is the pre-admission of the patient in the central patient reception (at the main entrance of the Klinikum rechts der Isar).

Afterwards, we ask you to report to the "Inpatient Waiting Area" on Ward R1a, on the first floor of Building 524. There, a sports orthopedic surgeon will explain the surgical procedure, the potential risks and complications, and the follow-up treatment.

During this consultation, the examination findings performed by your family doctor (laboratory tests, ECG, and chest X-ray if necessary) will also be reviewed (please bring all previous findings and laboratory results with you!) and, if necessary, further examinations will be arranged at our Klinikum Rechts der Isar.

It is also possible to have the entire preoperative assessment performed in our office. However, this is only feasible for "healthy" patients. For patients with underlying medical conditions (e.g., heart or lung disease, rheumatic disease, diabetics, patients with anticoagulation, etc.), a preliminary assessment by a general practitioner or specialist to determine their suitability for surgery is urgently required.

Anesthesia education

A further briefing session will take place in the premedication outpatient clinic of the Department of Anesthesiology. Here, you will discuss with an anesthesiologist which anesthesia procedure is appropriate for you.

Imaging and previous findings

As part of the preparation for surgery, the timeliness and completeness of the imaging (X-ray, MRI, CT, and other special examinations if necessary) will be checked and further examinations will be ordered if necessary.

We ask all patients to bring any existing x-rays, etc., either on film or—we prefer—digitalized on CD. Paper printouts are usually of very poor quality, which often requires a repeat examination.

Presentation on ward

Finally, the patient will be introduced to the nurses on the R1a ward responsible for the patient, who will be given appropriate nursing information and admitted. A single room is only available if there is sufficient bed capacity and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

Please plan approximately 3–4 hours for the entire surgical preparation and all examinations.

Overnight stay before surgery

Since all health insurance companies only cover inpatient admission on the day before surgery (including overnight stays before surgery) if medically necessary, our patients usually leave the clinic after the pre-admission examinations have been completed to spend the night in a hotel or at home.

If your journey is long or far, you can reserve a hotel room near the hospital. We can provide you with information about suitable hotels in the area upon request.

If bed capacity allows, there is also the option of an overnight stay in the hospital: "Hotel accommodation" is available as an optional service (costs approximately €137, payable in advance at the hospital's cashier). However, this is usually not reimbursed by health insurance companies.

On the day of the operation

The patient is admitted to the hospital on an empty stomach at 6:45 a.m. on the day of surgery to ward R1a, where he or she has already been introduced to the nurses the day before.
